Pediatric Communication Secrets

The Art of Pediatric Patient Communication
Abstract & Objectives

ABSTRACT: During this exciting and entertaining new presentation, Charly addresses communication and its effect on pediatric patients - persons who are often terrified, in pain, screaming and crying, or otherwise disinterested in making new friends!

Charly introduces specific techniques that improve a provider's ability to establish credibility, rapport and trust with the pediatric patient. She also addresses: effective body language techniques, sharing control with kids, specific words and their effects on kids, and how to perform a "Pediatric IV Inservice." (If there are children in the audience, Charly will actually demonstrate the techniques she uses!)

This presentation provides valuable information for all prehospital and inhospital emergency care providers.

Charly's Pediatric Communication topics include:

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After attending this presentation, participants will:

  1. recognize that "appropriate communication" techniques are often "different"
from manners of communication "normally" employed with pediatric patients.
  2. recognize the wisdom of behaving "differently" in order to obtain a child's attention,
and how to accomplish this attention-getting technique.
  3. understand the importance of body language, and how "squatting" just isn't enough!
  4. recognize a child's right to (and need for) respect and a sense of "control" over their environment and situation, and how to provide these things for the pediatric patient - without compromising patient care.
  5. develop an understanding of how (and why) providers "lie" to patients (without intending to) when using the word, "Okay" - and how to conquer this nasty habit by replacing the "O-word" with the "Magic Words" of emergency medicine (words that soothe, reassure, help, and heal):
    "Please," "Good," and "Thank you!"
  6. recognize the genesis of separation anxieties, and how to use specific words and phrases to improve pediatric patient tolerance of Mom and/or Dad being absent.
  7. understand the fears pediatric patients (ANY have regarding IV initiation, and how to soothe these fears by performing the "Pediatric IV Inservice."
